Three things that are vital when singing are breath, position and interpretation.
Breath because that's where the sound comes from.
Position to give the breath a chance to flow.
Consciousness is mainly something you use to strengthen your concentration and help give substance to the melody and the text: you are singing a text and therefore telling a story, you need to be aware of that. Find the fun in that. Making music is fun and when you sing, you are your own instrument. So also be critical in a structural way. In the end, singing, like any other profession, is something you can learn.
Singing is breathing out in tune
Singing is a very natural thing to do and yet we often do something different when we start singing. We often cut off words so we don't give the breath itself a chance to flow nicely. Singing is ultimately just talking in a certain tone. And because it is something organic, it should take no effort. Don't use force to make tones sound. Confidence, alongside position and awareness, is the key word.
Sound
A tone is created by first thinking and then reproducing it from your auditory memory. When you sing a tone very softly, you can always make it 'bigger', i.e. you can make the tone sound the way you want it to, without using force. If something doesn't work right away or if you feel pressure on your throat that makes you not sing well, just go back to the beginning: softly (and without judging the sound).
Pronunciation
Good pronunciation is one of the most important tools for singing. It ensures that your body actively cooperates and thus often immediately solves the problem when you don't sing so well. Even with a simple exercise on la-la-la or oe-oe-oe this applies.
When singing, you focus mainly on the vowels. On the vowels, your breath can flow outwards. So it's helpful that you sing the vowels nicely and keep the consonants short, but don't neglect them. To actually sound out the vowels, you sometimes have to open your mouth further than you are used to. It may feel a bit artificial at first, but make it your own. You will see that it helps you sing. By the way, good pronunciation is also a good thing while talking.
Consciously working with lyricsAlmost all songs have lyrics, tell a story. The better you master the lyrics, the finer the singing becomes. A lyric is important and gives substance to what you do. Many people underestimate this part. By memorising a text, you can play with it and because you are not forced to stare at a screen or on a sheet of paper, you also give yourself the chance to work on a natural position with the result that the breath can flow better. Everything ultimately hangs together.
